Lubbock, Texas – Nebraska got a strong performance from left-hander Jordan Roualdes and timely hitting, bouncing back for a 10-1 victory over Texas Tech Saturday afternoon.

Roualdes (2-1) turned in his best performance of the year, allowing one run on five hits over eight strong innings to help the Huskers split the doubleheader. The Sonoma, Calif., native fanned three and faced one over the minimum between the fourth and seventh innings.

“Jordan did a good job out there today,” Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson said. “He threw strikes right away, which was good because we did not play well the first three innings. The key the game was Jordan not getting himself or our team in a bad position where we got behind and started pressing. That is a different ballgame if Jordan doesn’t come out and pitch like he did. We needed someone to attack and the mound today and I thought that both Jordan and Sean (Yost) did that, which was encouraging.”

While Roualdes kept the Red Raiders (7-10, 1-1 Big 12) at bay early on, Adam Bailey awoke the Husker offense with a two-run homer in the fourth that provided all the runs they would need. Bailey went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs, as he accounted for the Huskers’ first four runs. He now has driven in at least three runs in six games and tops the Huskers with 27 RBIs on the season.

Jeff Tezak drove in a pair of runs for Nebraska (11-4-1, 1-1 Big 12), while Kyle Bubak and Cory Burleson had two hits apiece and combined to score five of the Huskers’ 10 runs on Saturday.

Texas Tech took a 1-0 lead in the third, getting a two-out RBI single from Chris Richburg, but the lead would not last as the Huskers pushed across runs in each of the next five innings.

Nebraska was held hitless through the first three frames before finally getting to Texas Tech starter Louis Head in the fourth on Bailey’s seventh homer of the year. Cody Asche coaxed a leadoff walk before Bailey launched Head’s next pitch over the fence in right to spot the Huskers a 2-1 lead.

Head (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on just one hit over 4.1 innings, as the right-hander walked five Huskers.

In the fifth, Bailey once again came through with the big hit, as his two-out, two-run double pushed the margin to 4-1. After a walk to Burleson and a sacrifice by Cooper, Bubak greeted reliever Cory Large with a sharp single to center to put runners on the corners. Large retired Asche for the second out, but Bailey drove a 2-0 pitch down the line in left, clearing the bases and making it 4-1.

“After the third inning, that is how our scoreboard should look,” Anderson said. “We put pressure on every single inning with base hits and punching them through. After the third, I really liked the things our offense did, but Jordan kept us in the game early.”

Nebraska extended the lead to four runs one inning later, getting an RBI single from Burleson. The Huskers were opportunistic, taking advantage of a pair of hit batters by Large to put runners on first and second with one out. Burleson then battled back from a 0-2 hole to get to a full count before the Husker catcher flared a single to score Tezak with the Huskers’ fifth run.

Once again, the Huskers got timely two-out hitting, as Tezak delivered a two-run double in the seventh. Bubak opened the inning with a walk before Asche’s single put runners on first and second. Colton Farrar retired the next two hitters before Tezak cleared the bases by ripping a two-run double off the out-stretched glove of Tech leftfielder Michael Reed.

The Huskers added a trio of insurance runs in the eighth, stringing together four straight hits, including a run-scoring single by Bubak and a RBI double from Jake Mort to take a 10-1 cushion.

The two teams will conclude the series Sunday afternoon with first pitch now set for 2 p.m., which is different that the originally scheduled time for the finale.
