Baseball Replay UNC Game 3 March 17, 2005

Lincoln – Alex Gordon (Lincoln, Neb.) and Brandon Fusilier (Coppell, Texas) homered and drove in three runs apiece, as No. 21 Nebraska completed a sweep of Northern Colorado with a 10-2 win Thursday afternoon at Hawks Field.

Gordon went 3-for-4 with a homer, his sixth of the season, and scored three times, while Fusilier also had three hits, including his sixth round tripper of the year, helping the Huskers improved to 15-2 with their seventh straight victory.

Curtis Ledbetter (Lawrence, Kan.) also had three hits and scored twice, as the Huskers pounded out 15 hits against three UNC pitchers. The third through six spots in the order combined to go 10-for-18 with eight of the Huskers’ 10 RBIs

"The middle of our lineup is really putting things together, and I am very happy with the production they are providing for us," Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson said.

Johnny Dorn (Grand Island, Neb.) earned the victory in relief, tossing three innings of no-hit ball with a pair of strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season. Dorn, who retired all nine hitters he faced and allowed one ball out of the infield, was part of a Husker relief corps that combined to throw 5.1 innings of shutout ball on Thursday.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top oft the first on Phi Delich RBI double, but the Huskers came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Fusilier and Ledbetter.

The Bears pulled within 3-2 off NU starter Luke Wertz in the third on a two-out RBI single by Brad Beaman, who had two hits in the losing effort, but Nebraska responded with four runs over the next three frames to push the advantage four runs.

Fusilier opened the third with a double to left and scored moments later on Brandon Buckman’s (Monument, Colo.) RBI single to right center. Gordon made it 5-2 one inning later, as chased UNC starter Jason Sands with a two-run homer to left.

Sands (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 3.2 innings, as neither starter got out of the fourth.

Nebraska tacked on another run against reliever Aaron Kelly in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs before Daniel Bruce (Omaha, Neb.) coaxed a walk to plate the Huskers’ sixth run.

That would be more than enough, as Dorn entered the game in the sixth and held UNC hitless over the next three innings. The Huskers tacked on four more runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Gordon, a two-run homer by Fusilier and an RBI single by catcher Jeff Christy (Lincoln, Neb.).
