Omaha, Neb. – Eighth-ranked Nebraska used its biggest inning in nine years to wipe an early deficit, as the Huskers erupted for a season-high 16 runs in a 16-7 victory over Creighton Wednesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Trailing 4-3 after four innings, the Huskers (30-7-1) sent 17 men to the plate en route to scoring 13 runs off of five Creighton pitchers, the most runs Nebraska has scored in an inning since also plating 13 against Chicago State on March 16, 1999.

The Huskers loaded the bases off Bluejay reliever Zak Moore on a Jake Opitz single and two walks before a costly error on Bluejay first baseman Darren Ruf opened the floodgates for the Huskers, as his wild throw on a fielder’s choice allowed a pair of runs to score. NU continued to capitalize against Creighton, getting two-run doubles from Ben Kline and Bryce Nimmo along with run-scoring doubles from Bryce Nimmo and Craig Corriston, as Nebraska totaled half its school-record 10 doubles in the inning off of five Bluejay pitchers.

Six Huskers had at least two hits on the night, as DJ Belfonte led Nebraska (30-7-1) with three RBI, while Craig Corriston, Nimmo and Cody Neer all totaled a pair of doubles in helping the Huskers take the season series against its in-state rivals. Nebraska’s 10 doubles broke the school record of eight set two other times, most recently against Missouri in 1995.

Opitz and Corriston totaled three hits apiece, as every starter had at least one hit in helping Nebraska record a season best in that category.

Michael Mariot earned the victory in relief of starter Erik Bird, as Mariot (2-0) allowed two runs over three innings. Moore took the loss, allowing three runs in 0.2 innings of work.

Nick Nordgren led Creighton (25-15) with a 2-for-5 night and drove in five of the Bluejays’ seven runs.

Creighton got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single from Nordgren. With two outs, Bird walked Ruf and hit Steve Winkelmann before Nordgren lined a RBI single into left.

The Huskers broke out the bats in the top of the second, as three extra base hits off of Creighton starter Pat Venditte accounted for a pair of runs. Corriston began the rally with a double to dead center before coming home on Belfonte’s triple off the wall in right. Neer then gave NU a 2-1 lead, scoring Belfonte with a double down the line in left.

Nebraska used some timely two-out hitting to extend the margin to 3-1 in the top of the third on Nick Sullivan’s RBI double. Abeita began the rally with a two-out walk before Sullivan ripped an 0-1 pitch to right center, allowing Abeita to score from first.

The Bluejays would come back in the fourth, as Nordgren continued his torrid hitting against the Huskers with a three-run homer to give Creighton a 4-3 lead. Elliott Soto walked to open the fourth before Winkelman singled to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Nordgren belted his seventh homer off the tarp in left.

The lead would be short-lived, as the Huskers put up their first double figure run total since last March, turning a close game into a 12-run cushion for Mariot.

The Huskers return to action Friday night, as they begin a three-game conference series at Baylor. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be carried across Nebraska on the Husker Sports Network.
