2007 : Gerch was a three-year starter for the Huskers, batting .304 with five homers, 14 doubles and 32 RBIs in 2007 • Selected to the NCAA Tempe Regional All-Tournament team, hitting .389 with a homer and three RBIs to help the Huskers to the title round • Was 2-for-9 with a two RBIs in the Big 12 Tournament, driving both runs in a 5-3 victory over No. 13 Texas A&M on May 23 • Hit .250 (3-for-12) with three RBIs in the series win at Kansas, as he drove in a season-high three runs, including a two-run triple, in NU’s 11-9 win on May 19 • Keyed NU’s series win over Baylor, going 6-for-11 with a homer and three RBIs, including a 2-for-3 effort with a homer and two RBIs on May 12 and a three-hit performance in the finale • Hit .417 (5-for-12) with a homer and three RBIs in the series loss to No. 4 Texas, including a pair of multi-hit games • Went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer in the series opener before going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the finale against UT on April 22 • Went 2-for-4 and scored NU’s only run in a loss to Creighton on April 17 • Hit .500 (6-for-12) with three doubles and four RBIs in the series win over No. 13 Oklahoma State, recording multi-hit games in all three contests • Was 2-for-4 with a two-run single and a stolen base in a win over Creighton on April 3 • Went 4-for-13 with a homer, two doubles and three runs scored in the series loss at No. 14 Texas A&M • Enjoyed a strong weekend series at Texas Tech, hitting .385 (5-for-13) with a homer, two RBIs and five runs scored • Collected his first career five-hit game against Illinois State on Feb. 18, going 5-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases • Had three hits in NU’s 8-7 win over No. 27 Florida Atlantic on Feb. 25.
2006: Gerch underwent off-season shoulder surgery, but was back in the lineup for the start of the season • Served as NU’s starting designated hitter, batting .290 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 37 contests • Garnered honorable-mention All-Big 12 accolades despite missing nearly three weeks with a shoulder injury and the death of his father in mid-April • Played his best baseball after returning to the lineup on April 29, hitting .328 (21-for-64) with three homers and 14 RBIs in his final 16 contests after hitting just .239 with four RBIs in his first 21 games • Turned in a career-long eight game hit streak from April 29 until May 13, including five straight multiple-hit contests • Homered against San Francisco on June 2 for his only hit in six NCAA Tournament at-bats • Went 5-for-13 during the Big 12 Championship, including a 3-for-5 performance with two RBIs vs. Kansas in the title game on May 28 • Played in 15 league contests, hitting .313 with two homers and 10 RBIs • Hit .545 (6-for-11) with two homers, two doubles, three RBIs and six runs scored in a series at No. 24 Oklahoma State, including a trio of multi-hit games • Was 2-for-4 with two doubles in the opener before having two hits, including a homer, in each of the final two contests • Made his first appearance since April 8 against Texas Tech on April 29, going 6-for-8 with five RBIs, as well as a walk and a hit-by pitch in three contests • Sparked NU’s come-from-behind win over the Red Raiders on April 29, coaxing a two-out, ninth-inning walk to spark a rally before coming back later in the day to go 3-for-4 with a triple and a season-high four RBIs • Followed that performance with three hits, including two doubles, in a 14-4 NU win on April 30 • Went 4-for-8 with two doubles and three runs scored at the Dairy Queen Classic, earning a spot on the all-tournament team • Had two hits, including a double in a win over Arizona on March 4 • Went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and scored twice in NU’s win over Notre Dame on March 3 • Was 2-for-6 with a homer in a 12-inning win over Richmond on Feb. 19 • Posted a 3-for-5 effort in an 8-5 loss to The Citadel on Feb. 18 • Spent the summer playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues.
2005: Gerch was one of three freshmen who broke into the everyday lineup in helping the Huskers to a Big 12 crown and a College World Series appearance • Was second on the team with a .364 average, as he appeared in 57 contests, including 38 starts • Ranked among the team leaders in RBIs (35, fourth), doubles (seven, sixth), triples (two, third), sacrifices (six, fourth) and runs scored (34, seventh) • Finished fourth on the team with eight multiple-RBI contests and sixth with 16 multi-hit games, as he started at all three outfield spots and at designated hitter during the season • Was NU’s offensive catalyst during its postseason run, hitting a team-high .460 while topping the Huskers with 16 RBIs in 13 games • Became the first Husker ever selected to the All-College World Series team after hitting .400 (6-for-15) with a homer, three RBIs and four runs scored in Omaha • Had two multi-hit games in Omaha, including a 3-for-6 effort with three RBIs and two runs scored in an 8-7 loss to No. 8 Arizona State on June 21 • Provided one of the most memorable moments of the 2005 College World Series with his three-run ninth-inning homer off ASU’s Pat Bresnehan to give NU a 7-6 lead • Hit .333 with a double and a walk in the Super Regional sweep of No. 13 Miami, including a 2-for-3 effort in the clinching win on June 11 • Named the Most Outstanding Player of the Lincoln Regional, hitting .417 (5-for-12) with six RBIs • Drove in a pair of runs in the Regional title game on June 5 against Creighton • Went 2-for-4 in the winner’s bracket game over Creighton on June 4, including a key three-run, bases clearing triple • Sparked Nebraska’s run through the Big 12 Tournament, hitting .556 (10-for-18) with seven RBIs and three runs scored to earn a spot on the all-tournament team • Drove in the only run in a 1-0 win over No. 8 Baylor on May 29 with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly off BU ace Mark McCormick • Set career highs in hits (four) and RBIs (six) in a win over No. 17 Missouri in an elimination game on May 28 and was 3-for-4 in a 5-4 win over the Tigers earlier that same day • Appeared in 20 conference games, hitting .239 with four RBIs • Made the most of his only start at Oklahoma, going 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored in NU’s 7-1 win on April 30 • Went 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored in a three-game series against top-ranked Texas, hitting a 16th-inning double and scoring the winning run in a 4-3 victory over No. 1 Texas on April 8 • Was 3-for-6 in two starts at Kansas on March 26, delivering a key go-ahead two-run double in the nightcap • Went 5-for-7 with two RBIs in a twinbill sweep of North Dakota State on April 13, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the opener before recording his first three-hit day in the finale • Enjoyed one of his best afternoons of the year in a doubleheader against South Dakota State on March 12, going 4-for-6 with two homers, eight RBIs and five runs scored, as he homered in both games and drove in five runs in the nightcap.
2004: Gerch spent the fall of 2003 at the University of Arkansas before transferring to Nebraska for the start of the spring semester and subsequently redshirted.
Pius X High School: Gerch enjoyed a stellar career playing for Coach Jim Hansen at Lincoln Pius X High School • Lettered in baseball for three seasons and finished his career by holding 21 school marks • Named first-team All-Nebraska by both the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star in 2003, batting .400 with 10 doubles, 16 RBIs and a .733 slugging percentage • Tabbed a second-team all-state pick as a utility player during his junior season, hitting .471 with seven doubles, three triples, two home runs, 26 runs batted in and six steals • Improved those numbers during American Legion play, hitting .500 (85-170) with 24 doubles, three triples, nine homers, 54 runs scored and 53 RBIs.
