2007 Outlook: Catcher Dominic Piazza (pronounced pee-ah-zah) is the only freshman in this season’s catching corps • Earned second-team all-state honors in Arizona last season, hitting .529 with seven homers and 40 RBIs • Drafted in the 49th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2006 MLB Draft • Has a natural swing from the left side and has good plate approach • Caught and also played first base during fall drills, as the coaches looked for ways to get Piazza’s bat in the lineup.
Notre Dame Prep: Piazza was a three-year performer on the diamond for Coach Guy Gianni • Led Notre Dame Prep to a 24-9 record and a third-place finish at the 2006 Class 4A state tournament • Named second-team Class 4A All-State by the Arizona Republic and Arizona Baseball Coaches Association (AzBCA) in 2006 after hitting .529 with seven homers, 44 RBIs and 11 doubles • Ranked in the top 20 in the state in average, homers and RBIs • Selected to the AzBCA Super 50 All-Star Game at Chase Park • Named MVP of the Class 4A All-Star game over the summer • Drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 49th round of the 2006 MLB Draft • Led the Arizona Firebirds to the 2006 Connie Mack World Series title in Farmington, N.M. • Paced the tournament with a .589 average en route to all-tournament honors • Was a member of the Dean’s List and was on the honor roll all four years in high school • Looked at several Division I programs including Arizona State, San Diego State, Oral Roberts and Texas Tech before selecting Nebraska.
