All-American Melissa Elmer led Nebraska with 11 kills and a career-high 16 blocks on Saturday at Kansas.

Lawrence, Kan. – All-American Melissa Elmer recorded her second double-double of the season, leading No. 1 Nebraska to a 30-16, 26-30, 30-22, 30-15 victory over Kansas in front of a sold out Horejsi Family Activities Center Saturday evening.

Elmer totaled 11 kills on .429 hitting and a career-high 16 blocks, the second-highest single-match total in school history. Elmer’s previous high in blocks was 15 in a win over Kansas in 2003, while the 16 stuffs were the highest by a Husker since Amber Holmquist had 16 against Texas during the 2000 season. Elmer posted her seventh double-double of her career and second against the Jayhawks and averages .3.09 kills and 2.57 blocks while hitting .504 in seven career matches against KU.

With the win, Nebraska improves to 15-0 overall and 7-0 in the Big 12, picking up its 30th straight conference win dating back to the 2003 season. KU dips to 12-5 overall and 4-4 in the league. Nebraska has now won all 75 matchups in the all-time series between the two teams.

In addition to Elmer’s effort, Christina Houghtelling posted her third double-double of the year with 14 kills on .458 hitting, while Sarah Pavan just missed a double-double with 12 kills and nine blocks, as the Huskers out-blocked Kansas, 22-4, and held the Jayhawks to .071 hitting in the match. The 22 blocks also tied a season high for NU, set against Pepperdine on Sept. 9.

The Huskers used its block to its advantage in the opener, recording six stuffs, including three by Elmer in a 30-16 victory. Nebraska hit .320 and had four service aces in game one, while Kansas hit -.138 with 11 hitting errors. Trailing 2-0, Nebraska silenced the crowd with a run of eight unanswered points, including seven straight from Houghtelling, to take an 8-2 lead. The Huskers continued to build the lead, taking a 15-6 advantage on a Pavan service ace, and were never threatened in cruising to a 14-point win.

After struggling offensively in game one, Kansas hit a blistering .395 in game two in taking a 30-26 victory. Trailing 18-13, Houghtelling led Nebraska on a 7-2 run with three kills, as the Huskers tied the game at 20-all after a Jayhawk hitting error. Kansas would not flinch, as an Emily Brown kill and a Husker attack error gave the host a two-point lead. NU closed to within 23-22 on an Elmer kills, but Brown, who had seven kills in game two, recorded another kill and a Husker hitting miscue pushed KU’s lead to 25-22. Houghtelling’s kill pulled NU within 27-25, but NU could not get closer, as Brown’s kill sent the teams to the locker room deadlocked.

In game three, Pavan sparked a decisive 7-1 run to give Nebraska a 30-22 victory. The Huskers held KU to .041 hitting, as they took a 2-1 lead. The Huskers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead and led 10-7 after a Tracy Stalls kill before KU came back with a 4-1 run to tie the score at 11 on a Brown solo block. With the score tied at 21, Pavan took over, recording three kills and a block in a four-point span, as NU took a 25-21 lead. After Brown’s kill pulled KU within 25-22, the Huskers closed game three with a 5-0 run, capped by a stuff block by Jennifer Saleaumua and Stalls on game point.

The Huskers put the final game away early, using runs of 6-1 and 5-0 to build a 15-6 lead and never looked back in a 30-15-victory. Nebraska recorded seven blocks, including six by Elmer, as the Jayhawks hit -.077 in the finale and was never challenged after building the early advantage

Brown led the Jayhawks with 16 kills on .333 hitting, as the only Jawhawk in double figures.

The Huskers begin a three-match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 11, as they host Creighton. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be carried by Time Warner Cable (Ch. 102), Cox Cable (Ch. 802) and Pinpoint Communications in selected cities.
