Nebraska Athletics' Post-Eligibility Opportunities (PEO) Program received the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Chevron Award on Wednesday, June 7th in Las Vegas, recognizing PEO as the nation's most innovative program in the college career services field for 2017.
“In creating and implementing this program a little over a year ago, our goal was to provide an opportunity that would most impact and benefit our student-athletes, providing them high-impact experiences many do not have the opportunity to experience while competing as Division I athletes,” said Ashley Stone, Director of Post-Eligibility Programs (pictured above, second from the right). “Through PEO, we've shown an unwavering commitment to our letterwinner graduates, providing resources to enhance their career marketability, personal and professional development, and intellectual growth.”
As the only program of its kind in the nation, PEO provides recent Nebraska graduates the opportunity to utilize up to a $7,500 scholarship for an internship, study abroad experience, or graduate coursework at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln or the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Since the program's inception, 62 participants have received $435,000 in PEO scholarship aid for experiences spanning 5 continents, 9 countries, and 13 states. Delivering upon intentional program objectives, participants continue to note PEO's impact through increased confidence, marketability, and intellectual growth, underscored in the 97% job placement rate for those participating in domestic and international internships. Participants also describe their experience as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that reduced or completely alleviated financial burdens.
Due to the program's success and numerous ways participants have benefited from the program, Nebraska Athletics will continue to pledge up to $1,000,000 annually to ensure these high-impact opportunities are available for current and future student-athletes.
In addition to receiving the 2017 NACE Chevron Award, PEO was nationally recognized by features in USA Today in May 2016 and Athletic Management magazine in April 2017.
