Colgate Wins Title at Border Olympics

Laredo, Texas - Nebraska men's golfer Mike Colgate fired a two-round score of 135 to capture the tournament title in the Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club on Saturday.

Colgate, a senior from Sarasota, Florida, followed his six-under-par opening-round 66, with a three-under-par 69 in Saturday's final round on the par-72, 7,204-yard layout in Laredo to finish at nine-under-par for the 36-hole tournament. Colgate earned medalist honors in a 100-player field in the tournament shortened to two rounds by weather. He defeated Bowling Green's Max Rispler and Campbell's Jesper Svensson by one stroke, as both golfers finished in a tie for second at 136.

Colgate helped the Huskers finish in a tie for 10th in the 19-team field in Texas. Nebraska finished with a two-round team score of 579 (285-294). The Fighting Camels of Cambell won the team title with a 559 (282-277). The hosts from Houston finished five strokes back in second place at 564 (278-286). UTSA finished third (565), Bowling Green took fourth (571), while Little Rock and McNeese State (573) finished in a tie for fifth.

In addition to Colgate's winning performance for the Huskers, sophomore Jace Guthmiller produced NU's second-best score with a 145 (69-76) to tie for 37th individually. Senior Justin Jennings (76-74) and sophomore Jackson Wendling (75-75)  both produced top-four scores for the Big Red on Saturday to finish in a tie for 69th. Freshman Tanner Owen rounded out the Husker lineup with a 152 (75-77) in a tie for 81st.

The Huskers will focus on improving their games for the next month before returning to competition at the Hawkeye Invitational at the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa, April 15-16.
