Stillwater, Okla.- The Nebraska men's tennis team competed at the ITA Central Regional Championships at Oklahoma State in both doubles and singles. Nebraska played in the main draw as well as some consolation matches.
In doubles, David Samardzija and Micah Klousia posted an 8-2 win over Hunter Clark and Matheus Rohde of UMKC. In their second match, the Husker duo of Samardzija and Klousia fell 8-5 to David Ferragut and Juan Calero from Saint Louis.
Chris Dean and Jon Meyer competed alongside each other in doubles play, while sophomores Toby Boyer and Tomislav Antoljak also teamed up in doubles action.
In the singles top draw, Boyer defeated Barnabas Koncz from Oral Roberts, 6-4, 7-5, while Dean notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Omaha's Colin Buckley. Samardzija and Klousia also recorded singles victories in consolation matches on Friday.
Coach Kerry McDermott said his young team will learn and grow from its experience at the regional.
"This has been a real eye-opener for our team and not the results we wanted," McDermott said. "We have a lot of work to do with this young team, but we as coaches saw much improvement from Micah Klousia and Chris Dean. They were good examples for their teammates with their efforts and play in court"
The Huskers will return to action at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. The tournament begins Thursday, Nov. 3. Last year, Toby Boyer shared a doubles title with his older brother, Dusty, a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection for the Huskers. Toby added a runner-up finish in singles as a freshman in 2015.
