Minneapolis - The Nebraska women’s tennis team captured 10 wins on Saturday to bring its tournament victory total to 24 through three days of competition at the USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships.
Lisa Andersson, Mary Hanna, Vasanti Shinde, M’Balia Bangoura, Katerina Matysova and Jeannie Lozowski each finished strong in doubles play for the Huskers on Saturday.
Andersson and Hanna started off the day with an 8-6 win over No. 5 seeds Giulia Guidetti and Tanaporn Thongsing of Wichita State. The senior pair later fell 8-7 (3) in a close match to No. 9 seeds Amina Ismail and Beatriz Machado Santos of Missouri.
In the consolation bracket, Bangoura and Shinde grabbed an 8-5 win over Omaha’s Kylie Boyer and Michelle Lo. In the third round, the duo secured an 8-4 win against South Dakota State’s Emily Van Dijk and Maria Velazco. Bangoura and Shinde will play in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket against Minnesota’s Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar Sunday at 9 a.m.
Matysova and Lozowski then claimed a 8-2 victory over Selim and Fotopolous of Oklahoma in extra doubles matches Saturday afternoon.
In consolation singles, Andersson defeated Cassie McKenzie of Saint Louis 6-4; 4-6; 1-0 (8). Due to an opponent withdrawal in the quarterfinals, Andersson will play Mahitha Dadireddy of Southern Miss in the consolation semifinals Sunday at noon.
Extra singles points from Huskers Shinde, Katerina Matysova, Jeannie Lozowski and Claire Reifeis brought the grand total to 23 for the Big Red on the third day of competeion.
Shinde pulled a 6-0, 6-4 win over Behling of UNO after her completeion of doubles matches. Teammate Matysova, also fought for a win over competition from UNO. The sole junior for the Huskers showed true leadership with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tucker.
Freshmen Lozowski and Reifeis also eached claimed an additonal win for the Nebraska women's tennis team. Lozowski battled hard to pocket a 4-6, 7-6(6), 1-0(8) tiebreaker win over Tchkarova of St. Louis to bring the total to 22 for the team. Taking home the 23rd and final win Saturday's tennis action, Reifeis secured a 6-4, 7-5 win over Khmelnitckaia from Kansas.
