Big Ten Tournament Notes

Champaign-Urbana, Ill. - The Nebraska women's tennis team will kick off Big Ten Tournament action at the Atkins Tennis Center with a dual against No. 8 seed Minnesota on Thursday, April 27 at 10 a.m. central time.

The Golden Gophers were tied with both Iowa and Nebraska for seventh place in the Big Ten standings. All three schools shared a 5-6 mark in Big Ten conference action during the regular season. Nebraska took the ninth seed with losses to both the Golden Gophers and the Hawkeyes earlier this season.

During the Huskers' last meeting with Minnesota in Minneapolis, the Big Red dropped a close 4-3 decision to the Golden Gophers. NU battled through doubles action, winning matches at both the No. 1 and No. 3 positions led by Mary Hanna, Paula Del Cueto Castillo, Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad. No. 1 doubles pair Hanna and Del Cueto Castillo were also the only two Huskers to secure wins in singles competition against Minnesota. Del Cueto Castillo powered through a three-set match at No. 3 to pocket the win over Barbara Mancera (6-1, 5-7, 7-5). Hanna secured a 6-4, 6-3 win over Annemarie Emme to bring the Huskers their third and final point for the dual.

Huskers to Watch

Indianapolis, Ind., native Claire Reifeis finished the season as the only freshman in Nebraska school history to record 20 or more wins in both singles and doubles in the same season (20-13 Singles; 21-7 Doubles).

Scouting No. 4 Ohio State

Earlier in the season, the Ohio State Buckeyes visited Lincoln and the Dillon Tennis Center for a dual with the Nebraska women's tennis team. NU surrendered all seven team points to the Buckeyes. The winner of Thursday's match between Nebraska and Minnesota will face No. 1 seed Ohio State on Friday at 10 a.m..
