Belzeski Falls in Quarterfinals at Intercollegiate Singles Championships
Baton Rouge, La. - Nebraska junior Kelly Belzeski fell to Stephanie Schwartz of Stephen F. Austin, 703-592, on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships at the Raising Cane's River Center in Baton Rouge, La.
Belzeski, who helped lead Nebraska to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship last weekend, was the third seed after Tuesday's qualifying round and took down Jordan Newham of Vanderbilt by a score of 587-529 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinal round.
In the quarterfinals, Schwartz, the 2016 NTCA National Player of the Year, just missed a perfect game as she bowled a 299 in the second game on the way to the match victory.
Husker senior Alexandra Mosquera also competed at the Intercollegiate Singles Championships, but she was defeated in the first round Tuesday by Estafania Cobo of Wichita State, 589-524.
In the six-game qualifying round, Belzeski captured the No. 3 seed after firing a total score of 1,242 with a high game of 237. Mosquera finished 17th in the qualifying round with a six-game score of 1,109 and a high game of 212.
The Intercollegiate Singles Championships features the top 24 men and top 24 women who advance out of four sectional qualifiers to compete for individual national titles. The semifinals and finals are set for Saturday.
