The Nebraska rifle team will round out its season this weekend when the Huskers travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the 2017 NCAA Championships. Both individual and team smallbore competition will be held on Friday, March 10 at the French Field House. Individual and team air rifle competition will be held the following day in the same location.
Also appearing in competition will be West Virginia, TCU, Murray State, Air Force, Alaska-Fairbanks, Kentucky and Ohio State.
NCAA Championship History
The Huskers look to secure a first-place finish for the first time in school history. Nebraska has not cracked the top three at the NCAA Championships since 2006 when the team took home second place. This marks Nebraska’s fifth straight NCAA Championship appearance, tying the school record. Defending champion West Virginia has taken the title the last four years and seeks to increase their streak to five.
Senior Rachel Martin is the only current Husker to have won an individual national title, becoming the third shooter in school history to do so after a first-place finish in smallbore in 2015. 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist and current Mountaineer Ginny Thrasher claimed the 2016 Smallbore Title, the 2016 Air Rifle Title and the 2016 Combined Title.
