Griffin Earns Preseason All-Big 12 Honor
Nebraska senior Kelsey Griffin was chosen as a preseason All-Big 12 selection by the league coaches for the third consecutive season, when the conference announced the 2009-10 teams on Wednesday.
Griffin, a 6-2 forward from Eagle River, Alaska, is the only member of the five-player All-Big 12 squad to earn three preseason selections. The two-time first-team All-Big 12 pick for the Huskers missed all of the 2008-09 season with a foot injury, after being named a preseason selection for the second straight year. Griffin became just the third player in Big 12 Conference history to earn preseason all-league honors on three occasions, joining Oklahoma's Courtney Paris (2006, 2007, 2008) and Tiffany Jackson from Texas (2004, 2005, 2006).
The top career rebounder in the Big 12 entering the 2009-10 campaign with 665 boards in her three seasons as a starter at Nebraska, Griffin is the No. 3 active career scorer in the league this season. She enters her senior season with 1,348 points.
Ahead of her on the league's career scoring list are Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley (1,926 points) and preseason Big 12 Player of the Year Danielle McCray from Kansas (1,539 points). Oklahoma junior guard Danielle Robinson and Texas senior guard Brittainey Raven rounded out the preseason All-Big 12 team.
Texas A&M's Danielle Adams was chosen Preseason Newcomer of the Year and Brittney Griner (Baylor) was selected Preseason Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Adams, a 6-1 forward/center was named Junior College Player of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association after averaging 22.1 points for Jefferson College in 2008-09. She led her squad to a 34-1 record with its only loss in the junior college national championship game.
Griner, a 6-8 center, was ranked as the nation's top player by all recruiting services. She averaged 33 points, 15.5 rebounds, 11.7 blocks, 3.4 steals and 3.1 assists as a senior at Houston's Nimitz High School while also dunking 52 times in 32 games. The national player of the year produced career totals of 3,114 points, 1,586 rebounds, 939 blocks, 268 steals and 198 assists.
