Lincoln - The University of Nebraska Athletic Department has named Marlon Lozano the new coach of the Husker Spirit Squad.

Lozano has served as a volunteer assistant to the Spirit Squad since his graduation from the University of Nebraska in 1994. During his time as an undergraduate, Lozano spent three years as a member of the Spirit Squad as a mascot.  His final year on the squad was the year Lil' Red was introduced, and Lozano was one of two Spirit Squad members to serve as the original Lil' Red.  Upon his graduation, he became an advisor in the University's Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, a position he has held for the past 14 years.

“It's an honor to be able to coach the team full-time now,” Lozano said.  “We've been emphasizing academics quite a bit lately, and last year, the squad posted a 3.5 GPA, which is the highest I've seen.  So I'm very excited to coach a great group of students and be able to keep that academic standard going as well.”

The Nebraska Spirit Squad is made up of 18 members of the Cheer Squad, 14 members of the Scarlets dance team, and eight mascots.  As a squad, their mission is to unify students, alumni and fans in support of the University of Nebraska and its athletes, and to motivate and entertain the crowd, promote school spirit, and represent the university at campus and community events.  The squad performs at athletic events, and serves as ambassadors for the Athletic Department and the University of Nebraska by attending hundreds of community and philanthropic events each year.
