N Club Golf Event Rekindles Connections and Competition
On Friday, April 7th, more than 100 Nebraska letterwinners and friends participated in the N Club Golf Scramble held at Quarry Oaks Golf Course outside of Ashland, Neb. Letterwinners from a number of sports, including football, golf, baseball, basketball and track and field, enjoyed the opportunity to meet and golf alongside fellow letterwinners, while competing for a number of hole prizes and team awards.
“The N Club Golf Scramble was a great event and Quarry Oaks was the perfect location,” said Chad Sievers football letterwinner (2002 - 2004) and first-time participant. “It’s always great to see friends and alums and continue to cultivate relationships with members of the Husker family.”
This year, new to the scramble, was an extra-special surprise for participants - a Nebraska “N” painted in the fairway of hole 17. Any golfer whose first tee shot landed in the painted N received additional Nebraska gear at the end of the scramble on top of raffle prizes and tee gifts golfers received upon checking in for the event.
Out of the 100+ golfers that participated in the event, two rose to the hole-17 challenge, including the oldest participant Cliff Dale, a 1951 football letterwinner, who considered this surprise a “nice touch.”
Once scores were entered at the end of the scramble, the winning team shot an impressive 16 under.
“As always, the N Club put on a great golf event at Quarry Oaks,” said Joel Makovicka, football letterwinner (1995-1998) and member of three national championship football teams. “Playing golf with and against former teammates and letterwinners is always a highlight of the day.”
Golfing with fellow teammates and letterwinners Matt Hoskinson (1995 - 1997), Tim Carpenter (1994 - 1997), and Bill Lafleur (1995 - 1998), Makovicka jokingly said winning with his teammates showed they “played way too much golf in college and did not concentrate as much on athletics or academics.”
Note that while “playing too much golf in college,” Makovicka and company helped Nebraska win three national football championships in the 90s and received a number of academic accolades while doing so.
A 13-under scorecard tiebreaker placed football letterwinner (1988 - 1990) Dan Svehla’s team in second place and the only female team in the tournament in third place, comprised of women’s golf letterwinners Kayla Barnes Knopik (2009 - 2012), Katie Jorgensen (2011 - 2012), and Head Women’s Golf Coach Robin Krapfl (1980 - 1982).
“I had a fun day playing in the N Club scramble with former players; it’s a great way to catch up and as always, brings out the competitive side,” said Krapfl. “I would love to see more females participate in the event from all sports as it’s an event that isn’t focused on being a low-handicap player, but focused on being around other Husker athletes, socializing, reconnecting and having fun . . . beating most of the guys was an added bonus.”
Nebraska Athletics and the N Club are excited to continue the golf scramble due to the continued positive comments and experiences of letterwinners and guests alike.
