Inner Circle Kicks off 2017-2018 School Year

When Inner Circle meets on Monday, Sept. 18th, there will be a lot of new faces. Of the 41 members, 32 are new. These members were chosen from a pool of over 225 student-athletes, nominated by coaches, administrators, and student life staff.

Kristen Dowell, senior track and field athlete and returning member, provides the following advice for new members: “Sit by student-athletes you have only gotten to say hi to in passing, or by student-athletes you have never gotten to talk with at all. You might be amazed at how much you have in common with those in other sports.”

Inner Circle has been an emerging leader group at Nebraska since 2014. The purpose of the group is to give student-athletes a chance to grow personally and professionally, while connecting them to prominent letterwinner alumni, business leaders, and community members.

“I hope to improve my leadership skills, so I can be a better leader in the leadership positions I hold as an athlete and as a student,” said Kayla Gadeken, sophomore rifle athlete and new member. “I also hope to make connections to other leaders that will be able to assist me in being a confident leader in the university and community.”

Former Inner Circle members have given feedback and helped shape the group into what it is today. Inner Circle will tackle topics such as leadership, professional etiquette, networking, career insights, mentoring, and transferrable skills.

“I am most excited to learn about professional etiquette and presence during the two events dedicated to teachings these skills,” said Austin Post, senior member of the men’s cross-country team and returning member. “Other than opportunities like those presented at Inner Circle, it's difficult for college students, and specifically student-athletes, to find time meant to improve their career readiness skills.”

Inner Circle meets once a month throughout the school year. The schedule for 2017-2018 includes:

  • Monday, Sept. 18th: Orientation/Mini-Retreat
  • Wednesday, Oct. 18th: Dining Etiquette
