2006 (Senior)
Fullback Dane Todd continued Nebraska’s tradition of excellence both on and off the field and established himself as one of the nation’s top scholar-athletes during his career. In addition to his on-field contributions, Todd also distinguished himself in the classroom and the community.
The Lincoln native earned major academic honors for the second consecutive year in 2006. Todd was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America second team, pushing Nebraska’s nation-leading total of academic All-Americans to 86. A year ago, he joined teammate Kurt Mann as a first-team selection. Todd completed his undergraduate work last May with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in biological sciences, and he was one of four Husker seniors to play in 2006 with their degrees in hand.
On the field, the 5-11, 235-pound Todd had the skills to excel in the West Coast Offense, including the flexibility to both run and catch the football, as well as providing outstanding blocking skills. He played in all 14 contests as a senior and made eight starts. Todd’s efforts paid dividends for Nebraska, as the balanced Husker offense ranked among the nation’s leaders. His efforts did not go unrecognized, as the league’s coaches voted Todd as the fullback on their first-team All-Big 12 team.
Todd aided an offensive unit that produced not only the first 3,000-yard passer in school history in senior Zac Taylor, but also a ground game featuring four talented I-backs that combined to rush for more than 2,400 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Individually, Todd stepped into the spotlight by scoring his first career touchdown against Nicholls State on a one-yard pass from Taylor in the first quarter. Todd added another seven-yard reception to equal his single-game high for receptions previously recorded twice. Todd had a four-yard catch against Auburn in the Cotton Bowl, and had a 13-yard kickoff return against Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Game.
2005 (Junior)
Todd served as I-back Cory Ross’ top lead blocker as a junior, and helped pave the way for Ross to gain a team-high 721 rushing yards. Todd provided quarterback Zac Taylor with an additional receiving option out of the backfield, with eight catches for 75 yards. Todd recorded personal-best totals of two receptions for 23 yards against both Missouri and Kansas State, while he posted his career-long catch of 17 yards against Oklahoma. He also added single catches against Maine and Kansas.
Todd also saw time on special teams and finished with seven tackles. He made a key tackle on a punt return in the final minute in the Alamo Bowl win over Michigan.
2004 (Sophomore)
Todd played in all 11 games in Nebraska's balanced offensive attack. He did not have a rushing attempt, but caught two passes, one each against Western Illinois and Kansas, covering a total of four yards. Todd also had an unassisted tackle.
2003 (Redshirt Freshman)
Todd played in five games as a reserve fullback, and had two carries for six yards, a four-yard run against Troy State and a two-yard gain against Texas A&M.
2002 (Redshirt)
Todd sat out his first season at Nebraska as a redshirt.
Before Nebraska (Southeast HS)
Todd was a Lincoln Journal Star super-state selection and an All-Nebraska pick by the Omaha World-Herald as a linebacker for Lincoln Southeast and Coach Chuck Mizerski. Todd also played fullback for the Knights, who captured the state title during Todd’s junior season in 2000. Todd was named the Gatorade Circle of Champions Nebraska Player of the Year, rushing for 453 yards (7.95 per carry) in 2000, despite suffering a late-season injury. He ran for more than 400 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior, while making 130 tackles from his linebacker position. Todd was named to the PrepStar Midlands Region team and also considered an offer from Duke and received interest from Iowa, Iowa State and Northwestern. Academically, he ranked third in his class of 606 students, was a member of Southeast’s Student Council, earned academic all-state honors and made the honor roll every semester.
Personal
The son of Loy and Kim Todd, Dane was born on Aug. 8, 1983. He completed his undergraduate work in biological sciences with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. In addition to academic All-America honors, Todd is a two-time academic All-Big 12 selection and has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll each of his eight semesters. In addition to his selection to each of the past Brook Berringer Citizenship teams, Todd was a finalist for the inaugural Wuerffel Trophy in 2005, an award combining excellence in athletics, academics and community involvement. Todd has volunteered his time with American Education Week, "School is Cool" Week, the Dads of Kids with Disabilities, the UNL Shadowing Program, and numerous hospital visits and speaking engagements. Todd has been a representative on the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Committee each of the past three years. He is also a Big 12 Community Champion.
