Senior wingback Troy Hassebroek (pronounced HASS-eh-brook) played a key role in the Husker passing game in 2002 and is one of the most decorated Huskers off the field. Hassebroek had served as a reserve wingback for three seasons, before taking over the starting role this fall. He responded with seven receptions and continued to play a key role as a downfield blocker in the Husker rushing game.

Hassebroek is also strong in the classroom and in 2002 he earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors for the second straight season. He has been one of the most involved Huskers in the community in recent memory. For his efforts in that area, Hassebroek was one of 11 Division I-A players named to the AFCA Good Works Team. He also received the 2002 Brook Berringer Memorial Scholarship, given annually to a senior player who is active in the community. Hassebroek was also named the 2002 UNL Homecoming King at halftime of the Kansas game.

2002: The Lincoln native started seven games at wingback for the Huskers, and had seven receptions for 81 yards. Hassebroek had three games with two receptions each. He opened the season with two catches for 24 yards against Arizona State. His next reception was a 10-yard touchdown grab against McNeese State, marking the first TD of his career. He added two catches each at Oklahoma State and Kansas State, including a career-long 23-yard grab against the Wildcats.

Hassebroek also served on NU's punt coverage and kickoff return teams. He had three kickoff returns for 29 yards and added six tackles, including two each against Troy State and Kansas.

2001: Hassebroek played in all 12 games backing up Gibson at wingback. While he did not have a reception, Hassebroek did have two kickoff returns for 44 yards, including a 28-yard return vs. No. 2 Oklahoma and a 16-yard return at Kansas. He also had an assisted tackle vs. TCU and three solo tackles (one each against Notre Dame, Baylor and Kansas) playing on the punt coverage team. His four tackles led all offensive players in 2001. Hassebroek was also a first-team member of the kickoff return and punt teams and saw action in both roles in the 2002 Rose Bowl.

2000: As a sophomore, Hassebroek played in all 11 games, backing up Bobby Newcombe and Gibson at the wingback position. In the 2000 Alamo Bowl, Hassebroek recorded one catch for eight yards.

1999: Hassebroek played in five games plus the Fiesta Bowl vs. Tennessee, when he earned his first career start. He did not have any receptions in 1999.

1998: A former walk-on, Hassebroek redshirted his first year.

At Lincoln High HS: Hassebroek played I-back and free safety, punted and returned kickoffs for Lincoln High. He earned honorable-mention all-state honors as a senior in 1997. He also lettered two years in basketball and track, throwing the discus and shot with a best of 173 feet in the discus. Named to the National Honor Society, Hassebroek was the male student-athlete of the year as a senior.

Personal: The son of Ron and Helen Hassebroek, Troy was born on July 6, 1980. His brother, Adam, is a redshirt freshman wingback for the Huskers. Majoring in middle grades education, Hassebroek has a 3.198 cumulative grade-point average. He has been active in the community and won the 2002 Big 12 Community Champion Award. He is the Vice President Elect for the 2002-03 Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB), and was named to the 2001 and 2002 Brook Berringer Citizenship Team after logging many hours in the community. He has been a volunteer for Camp Kitaki, Team Spirit hospital visits, Husker Outreach Council, Meals on Wheels and on the Kearney Tour of Excellence. He coordinated the Halloween Trick or Treat Street in 2001 and is a two-time member of the Husker Football Unity Council.
