- 2002 Finalist for Nebraska Lifter-of-the-Year Award
Fifth-year senior Wes Cody has started every game at right offensive guard this fall and has played in 19 games in his Husker career. Cody and his offensive line mates have led Nebraska to a Big 12-leading 268.9 rushing yards per game, a mark that ranks fourth in the country. The Huskers rolled up more than 300 yards rushing five times in 2002.
Cody finished fourth on the Husker offensive line with 91 pancakes, including four double-figure pancake games. A powerful force on the offensive front, Cody was a finalist for the 2002 Nebraska Lifter-of-the- Year Award. He is one of several Huskers playing in the bowl game as a graduate after earning a bachelor's degree in communication studies.
2002: Cody took over the starting right guard duties in spring ball and held the starting job throughout the season. He finished his senior year with 91 pancakes, including a season-high 13 knock-downs against McNeese State when Nebraska rushed for a season-high 444 yards. He also reached double figures in pancakes with 11 against Utah State and 10 each against Kansas and Missouri. His 10 knock-downs against the Tigers and Jayhawks tied for the team lead.
2001: Cody played in every game as the backup right guard to Jon Rutherford. Although he did not start a game, Cody made a solid contribution as a "swing" guard, seeing extensive action on both sides. Cody recorded 79 pancakes (6.6 ppg) to rank sixth on the team. He had two double-figure pancake performances and five-or-more pancakes nine times, including five vs. TCU; six vs. then-No. 17 Notre Dame; a career-best 14 pancakes against Rice; seven vs. Iowa State; eight at Baylor (as NU totaled 641 rushing yards); 11 vs. Texas Tech; eight at Kansas; five vs. Kansas State and six at Colorado. He also had four against Oklahoma. Cody's 14 pancakes against Rice helped Nebraska gain 292 yards rushing and 497 total-offense yards and marked the first time in his career that Cody would total double-figure pancakes. With 14 pancakes, Cody was one of five Huskers to record double-figures against Rice. His career-best performance was one more than his season total entering the game, and was just six shy of his career total prior to the contest. Cody and company assisted the Huskers to a No. 1 ranking in rushing, averaging 314.7 yards per game. Cody played in the 2002 Rose Bowl, the only non-starter to see action on the offensive line.
2000: Cody played in six games, backing up fellow sophomore Toniu Fonoti at left guard. Cody, who was on NU?s travel roster for every game, had seven pancakes in 2000, including a season-high three vs. Baylor and Kansas. He also had one in the season opener vs. San Jose State.
1999: Cody played against Iowa State as a redshirt freshman.
1998: A scholarship athlete, Cody redshirted his first year at NU.
At Bergan HS: Cody helped lead Fremont Bergan to the state playoffs each of his four years and earned first-team All-Nebraska honors from the Omaha World-Herald and first-team super-state honors from the Lincoln Journal Star as an offensive lineman in 1997. He earned Class C-2 all-state honors as a defensive lineman from the World-Herald playing for Coach Larry Martin. Cody was also a USA Today Honorable-Mention All-America selection and an All-Midlands Region honoree by SuperPrep. He had 112 tackles (52 solo), including 11 sacks and 35 tackles for loss as a senior. A Nebraska native, Cody did not take any other official visits, but considered Kansas State, Michigan, Wyoming, Kansas, Army and Navy.
Personal: The son of William and Marge Cody, Wes has three older sisters. He was born on March 23, 1980, and majors in communication studies. Cody was a Teammates volunteer in 2001 and is a member of the 2002 Nebraska Football Unity Council.
