- Two-Time Big 12 Commissioner's Fall Academic Honor Roll (2008, 2009)
2009 Outlook Sophomore tight end Jay Martin will enter fall camp looking to battle for playing time at one of Nebraska's deepest and most talented positions. The group is led by juniors Mike McNeill and Dreu Young, but a number of talented young players will look to solidify a place in the rotation behind that experienced duo. Martin began his career at defensive end, before moving to offense in the spring of 2008.
Martin is nearly perfect in the classroom, carrying a 3.982 cumulative grade-point average after four semesters of college.
2008 (Redshirt Freshman) Martin moved to tight end and provided depth, but did not see game action.
2007 (Redshirt) Martin sat out his first season in the program and was a reserve linebacker.
Before Nebraska (Waverly HS) Jay was a standout multi-sport performer for Waverly High School, where he earned first-team Class B all-state honors as a defensive lineman from the Lincoln Journal Star. Martin, who was selected to play in the 2007 Shrine Bowl, also qualified for the state track meet in the hurdles. His older brother, Lee, recently completed his track career with the Huskers.
Personal Martin was born on Nov. 30, 1988, and is the son of Bob and Sheri Martin. His father was a 1975 All-American with the Huskers, and Jay is also the cousin of former Husker linebackers Bo and Barrett Ruud. Martin is majoring in business administration and has been selected to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll each of his first four semesters. He has volunteered his time at the F Street Recreation Center, the Legacy Retirement Center and several hospital visits, including one in Jacksonville during Nebraska's Gator Bowl trip.
