2009 Outlook Omaha native Matt Manninger is among a group of young linebackers vying for playing time at the Buck linebacker position. The 6-1, 220-pound Manninger joined the Huskers as a walk-on from Nebraska high school powerhouse Omaha Creighton Prep and worked on the scout team during his first season in Lincoln.
2008 (Redshirt) Manninger sat out his first season in the program as a redshirt.
Before Nebraska (Omaha Creighton Prep HS) Manninger earned honorable-mention Class A all-state accolades from both the Lincoln Journal Star and the Omaha World-Herald as a senior. A two-year starter at Omaha Creighton Prep, Manninger started at middle linebacker, leading his team to playoff berths each year of his prep career. Manninger led the state of Nebraska with four fumble recoveries.
Manninger was getting interest from several Division II schools before choosing to walk on at Nebraska, joining high school teammates Colin and Conor McDermott in the Huskers' 2008 walk-on class.
Personal Matt was born on Sept. 22, 1989, and is the son of Mike and Mary Beth Manninger. He is majoring in nutrition, exercise and health science, and has volunteered time with the Special Olympics and People's City Mission.
