  • 2005 Second-Team Academic All-Big 12
  • Two-Time Big 12 Commissioner’s Spring Academic Honor Roll (2003, 2005)
  • 2004 Big 12 Commissioner’s Fall Academic Honor Roll

2005 (Senior)
Jared Helming capped his Nebraska career in strong fashion, starting the final two games of his Husker career, helping Nebraska to victories over Colorado and Michigan. A defensive lineman for his first three years at Nebraska, Helming switched to offense under Head Coach Bill Callahan and offensive line coach Dennis Wagner in the spring of 2004.

Helming was a reserve guard for most of his senior season, before earning his first career start at left guard against Colorado. As a senior, he played in all 12 games, also serving on Nebraska’s PAT and field goal units. The play of the Husker offensive line helped Nebraska produce the top two single-game passing totals in school history with 431 yards against Iowa State and 392 passing yards at Colorado.

Helming played the entire 2005 campaign as a graduate student after picking up his degree in business administration in May of 2005. He was a second-team academic All-Big 12 pick as a senior.

2004 (Junior)
Helming was one of three linemen who shifted from defense to offense in the spring, and he went on to play in every game as a lineman on Nebraska's place-kicking unit. Helming also saw limited action as a reserve offensive guard.

2003 (Sophomore)
Helming played three games as a reserve defensive tackle and made a pair of assisted tackles, one each against Utah State and Iowa State.

2002 (Redshirt Freshman)
Helming made his first career appearance late in the game against Arizona State, but tore the ACL in his left knee on his only play and was lost for the season.

2001 (Redshirt)
A scholarship recruit, Helming redshirted in his first season at Nebraska.

Before Nebraska (Kickapoo HS)
Helming earned consensus prep All-America honors for Coach Kurt Thompson at Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Mo., the same school of former Husker All-Big 12 defensive lineman Steve Warren. Helming played both sides of the ball, starting four years on defense and two on offense. Helming was the Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year and was a two-time class 5A all-state defensive lineman.

Helming made 73 tackles as a senior, including 25 tackles for loss, helping Kickapoo to the state semifinals. He made 87 tackles in 1999, and 69 in 1998. Helming was a three-year letterwinner and all-state selection in track, throwing the shot put and discus. He was strong in the classroom in high school, graduating with a 3.88 grade-point average. He committed to the Huskers immediately after attending Big Red Football School in 2000, turning down numerous other offers, including Michigan, Tennessee, Texas, Florida State and Kansas State.

Personal
The son of George and Patty Helming, Jared was born on Dec. 23, 1982. His older brother, Ryan, started at quarterback for Northern Iowa in 1998 and 2000. Jared graduated with a degree in business administration in May of 2005 and played his entire senior season as a graduate student. He earned second-team academic All-Big 12 honors as a senior and was a three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.
