Left tackle Dave Volk provided consistent leadership to a young offensive line in 2001.  Behind Volk's leadership, the O-Line added a 15th NCAA rushing title by churning out 314.7 yards per game.  Nebraska also ranked seventh nationally in scoring offense and 12th in total offense.

Volk's strong pass-blocking skills were instrumental in helping the Huskers allow just five sacks in 2001.  Volk owns the Nebraska position record for pro-agility run points (722), running the 20-yard event in 4.23 seconds.  His Performance Index score of 2,238 is best among current Husker offensive lineman.

An excellent student as well, Volk earned a prestigious NACDA Postgraduate Scholarship by carrying a 3.289 cumulative grade-point average in psychology and graduating in August 2001.  Volk joined Georgia Tech's George Godsey, Syracuse's Kyle Johnson and TCU's Bruce Roberst in earning $5,000 toward postgraduate degrees.  Volk was just the fourth Husker in history to be named first-team Academic All-Big 12 four years, joining punter Mike Stigge (1989-92), offensive tackle Rob Zatechka (1991-94) and linebacker Brian Shaw (1996-99).

For his efforts on the field, Volk earned consensus second-team All-Big 12 honors. He became just the fourth Husker with more than 300 career pancakes, finishing with 343 pancakes to rank fifth all time at NU.  With 10.0 pancakes per game, Volk was one of three Huskers who averaged double-figure pancakes in 2001-joining Toniu Fonoti (16.8) and John Garrison (10.4).  Volk started his 39th straight game in the Rose Bowl.

One of five Husker co-captains as a senior, Volk shared the Cletus Fischer Native Son Award with Jeremy Slechta.  Volk signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Bears in 2002.
