A big-play athlete, Bobby Newcombe (pronounced NEW-come) finished his career ranked second on Nebraska's all-time punt return list with 829 career yards, including a school-record 94-yard punt return for a touchdown in Nebraska's win over Missouri in 2000.  Newcombe's return bettered the 92-yard return by Husker Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers against Oklahoma State in 1971 and tied a Big 12 Conference record held by three other players.

Newcombe, who was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft, ranked 15th nationally as a senior in punt return average with 14.6 yards per return.  His blazing speed (1.50 electronic 10-yard dash, 4.46 electronic 40) helped him produce four career punt returns for touchdowns.  He finished 1999 at No.2 nationally in punt returns, averaging 18.38 yards per return, which ranked sixth all time at NU, while Newcombe's 20.3 yards per punt return in 1997 ranked third.

Along with the 94-yarder, Newcombe scored on a 60-yard return in the 2000 Fiesta Bowl against Tennessee, and 86-yard return against Kansas in 1999 and a 53-yard return against Iowa State in 1997.  He finished his career averaging 17.3 yards per return.

Newcombe finished with 973 career passing yards, 489 career rushing yards, 829 punt return yards, 660 receiving yards and 54 kickoff return yards.  He posted 1,463 career total offensive yards, 15 TDs and 2,032 career all-purpose yards with 19 scores.

Newcombe ranks 22nd all-time at Nebraska in passing yardage and finished tied for 23rd at Nebraska with 45 career receptions, making him the only player in Husker history to rank among the top 25 in both passing and receptions.  He ranks 36th in scoring with 114 points.
