Troy Watchorn may have recorded one of the most dramatic turnarounds by a Husker. After walking on to the program, Watchorn redshirted in 1996. He played one game in 1997, the season opener that his father attended, but then struggled after the death of his father who died days after the game. He quit the team for a time, before seeing action on special teams in 1998. He then reasserted himself in 1999, and began the 2000 season as the No. 3 free safety behind Dion Booker and Clint Finley. Watchorn worked his way up and started four games as a senior. He tied a school record in 2000 for consecutive games with an interception (four) and totaled a team-high five on the season, earning third-team All-Big 12 honors. Also a solid student, Watchorn was a five-time member of the Big 12 honor rolls and earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors.
