  • Ranks Second on the Husker Career Tackle Chart with 287

First-Team All-American Mike Brown continued to do what he did best throughout his career - make tackles.  Brown had a reputation as a hard hitter who rarely missed.  A three-year starter, Brown finished second on the NU career tackle chart with 287 tackle, behind Jerry Murtaugh (LB with 342 from 1968-70).  He is also tied for ninth on the Husker career interceptions list and fifth on the NU career unassisted tackle list with 137.  Brown also ranked among the top 10 with 14 career pass breakups.  He had nine double-figure tackle days in his career, with a career-best 19 vs. Texas in 1998.  With 96 tackles in 1999, he become just the third Husker to lead Nebraska in tackles for three consecutive years and the first defensive back, joining Murtaugh and linebacker Marc Munford (1984-86).  A first-team GTE Academic All-American, Brown is also a three-time first-team all-conference academic honor winner.  And even though he did not redshirt, he graduated in May, 2000.  Mike and Ralph Brown both earned first-team All-America honors in 1999, the first time NU has had two defensive backs to earn such honors in the same year.  The Browns (no relation) were the first defensive backs to earn first-team All-America honors since Bret Clark was honored in 1984 and gave NU multiple All-Americans for the 26th time in the history of Husker football (15th time since 1980).

Mike Brown did it all for the Huskers.  He began his Husker career at corner as a freshman, and played at rover and free saftey for NU.  But no matter what the position, it was evident he was the quarterback of the secondary.  Brown started 38 straight games for the Huskers, counting the last two bowl games and served as a team captain in 1999.
