Sewell's performance on the field earned him selection in the sixth round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos with the 190th overall selection.

Sewell was also solid in the classroom and in the community, earning second-team academic All-Big 12 honors. He also earned the first Jake Young Memorial Scholarship presented at the Utah State game, in honor of the former Husker All-American lineman who was killed in the fall of 2002. Sewell was also a finalist for NU's Lifter-of-the-Year award.

Sewell played offensive guard and was a key member of a dominant offensive line that helped Lincoln Southeast High School to back-to-back state titles in 1997 and 1998. He played nose tackle on defense. Sewell earned all-city and Class A all-state honors, while being a second-team super-state pick by the Lincoln Journal Star. He was also the Class A heavyweight powerlifting champion. He had numerous Division I-AA and Division II offers out of high school and was originally recruited to Nebraska as a walk-on.
