Kenny Walker recorded one of four sacks by the Husker defense against Baylor on Sept. 1, 1990.

On Sept. 1, 1990 the Huskers opened the season with a 13-0 win over the Baylor Bears, marking one of only two times Nebraska has opened the season on the first day in September.

Under a clear sky and temperatures in the low-90s, Nebraska used the legs of place-kicker Gregg Barrios and running back Scott Baldwin to defeat the Bears in its first match-up with the former Southwest Conference foe since 1977.

In front of an ESPN national television audience, the Blackshirt defense earned one of its two shutouts during the 1990 season (also Minnesota on Sept. 22, 56-0), while chalking up its second straight win over the Bears in a streak that has since extended to eight games after Nebraska’s 23-14 win in Waco during the 2005 season.

The Husker defense was stout on this sunny September day, holding the Bears to 164 yards of total offense and harassing BU quarterback Steve Needham for four sacks (one each by Pat Englebert, Pat Tyrance, Mike Croel and Kenny Walker).

The defensive effort played a major role after the Husker offense could only collect a pair of field goals by Barrios (37, 20) in the first half to take a 6-0 lead at halftime. Unable to extend the lead with a scoreless third quarter, Baldwin used two of his game-high 92 rushing yards on a fourth-quarter touchdown run to produce the final 13-0 margin.

Two Husker quarterbacks saw action, as Mike Grant completed 5-of-6 passes for 86 yards, while Mickey Joseph was 0-for-2 with an interception in limited action.

The Baylor Bears went on to a 6-4-1 record in 1990. The following season, Baylor earned one of its biggest wins in school history by defeating No. 12 and defending co-national champion Colorado, 16-14, in Boulder.

Since the 13-point win, the Huskers have outscored the Bears by an average score of 48-17 in their last six meetings. Only the 2005 game (23-14) had a margin closer than 28 points.

Nebraska is 2-0 all time on Sept. 1, also defeating Troy State, 42-14, in 2001.
