Junior Hannah Edwards added valuable depth to the Husker women’s cross country team during the 2013 season, as she continued to cut times off of her races.
The Whittier, Calif., native opened up her junior campaign by placing 13th at Nebraska’s lone home meet of the season at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational, held at Pioneers Park. Edwards ran a ‘personal best’ time of 22:51.80, crossing the line as the third Husker to finish the race.
Edwards followed up her Woody Greeno performance by placing 155th at the talent-rich Roy Griak Invite in Minneapolis, Minn. Edwards was the fourth Husker to cross the finish line, running a time of 23:35.
At the Tim Young Invitational held by the University of South Dakota, Edwards added a top-10 finish to her season, placing ninth with a time of 19:07.23.
Edwards then placed 101st at the Big Ten Championships held in West Lafayette, Ind., with a time of 24:15.7 in her last meet of the season.
At seasons end, Edwards was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
After adjusting to the longer distances covered in collegiate cross country as a freshman, Edwards made strides during her sophomore campaign while adding valuable depth for the Huskers.
She ran a season-best 24:09.73 to place 83rd at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational. Although she did not compete in the postseason for the Huskers, Edwards earned her second cross country letter.
Edwards worked to make the adjustment to the longer distances of collegiate cross country as a freshman. She earned her first cross country letter by competing in three meets for the Huskers during her freshman campaign while increasing her training base.
Edwards competed for the first time collegiately at the UNO/Creighton Invitational, where she placed 26th overall and seventh among the Huskers with a time of 21:31.19.
In her last two meets of the year, Edwards competed at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneers Park in Lincoln. She finished 102nd overall (24:13.7). Her final meet of the year came at the SDSU Classic in Brookings, S.D., where she placed 43rd with a season-best time of 19:39.0.
High School (La Serna)
Edwards was a standout in both cross country and track at La Serna High School in Whittier, Calif. Her senior cross country season was highlighted by a ninth-place finish at the Sunny Hills Wayne Walker Invitational, when she covered the 5K course in 19:36 to finish ninth.
She posted her personal-best 5K time with a 19:35 to take fifth place at the Clovis Invitational as a junior in 2009. Later her junior year, she placed 21st at the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Preliminaries in November.
On the track, Edwards produced a personal best of 5:14.80 in the 1,600 meters. She established her personal best of 11:42.37 in the 3,200 meters at the 2010 Trabuco Hill Invitational. Edwards ran in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the 2010 CIF-SS Divisional Finals.
The daughter of Mitch and Jan Edwards, Hannah was born Aug. 14, 1993. Hannah is majoring in nutrition, exercise and health sciences at Nebraska.
