Jessica Wright returns as a senior leader for the Nebraska cross country team in 2014. The two-time letterwinner will try to help provide guidance to a young distance squad that includes six freshmen and two sophomores on its 13-runner roster.
A regular in Nebraska’s top seven as a junior, Wright hopes to see continued individual improvement to help the Huskers climb in the Big Ten standings in her final season.
Wright also has been a leader in the classroom and the community for the Huskers, earning academic All-Big Ten honors in 2013 and a spot on the inaugural Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2014.
Wright was a leader for the Huskers as a junior, finishing in Nebraska’s top seven in four of the Huskers’ six competitions. She opened the season with a 15th-place finish (17:27.11) as NU’s No. 4 finisher at the Augustana Twilight in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Sept. 6.
She took 51st (24:10.40) as Nebraska’s No. 7 runner at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneers Park in Lincoln on Sept. 21.
Wright did not compete at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 28, but returned to the course for the regular-season finale at the Tim Young Invitational on Oct. 19. She was NU’s No. 6 finisher in Vermillion, S.D., taking 11th overall in a time of 19:19.74.
Wright was NU’s No. 7 finisher at the Big Ten Championships, taking 99th overall in a time of 24:02.3 at West Lafayette, Ind., on Nov. 3. She did not compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Ames, Iowa, on Nov. 15.
A strong performer in the classroom, Wright captured academic All-Big Ten honors for the first time in 2013, while earning spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of 2013-14.
After spending her freshman year at Marquette, Wright made an immediate impact for Nebraska as one of the team’s top five runners.
Wright, who claimed Nebraska’s Most Improved Runner Award for the season, opened her Husker career at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. She led the Huskers by finishing 248th (21:42) in one of the nation’s top regular-season competitions. She added a 36th-place finish in a time of 23:10.78 at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational.
A standout in the classroom, Wright earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters of 2012-13.
Before Nebraska (Marquette/Bellevue West)
Wright spent the 2011 season at Marquette before electing to transfer to Nebraska.
The Bellevue West High School graduate produced a successful running career for the Thunder Birds. She earned Lincoln Journal Star Super-State honors in 2008 and 2010. Wright finished fourth at the Nebraska Class A High School Championships in 2010. She was the valedictorian of Bellevue West’s 2011 senior class.
Jessica is the daughter of Jack and Jacki Wright, and she was born Oct. 8, 1992. A psychology major, Jessica earned academic All-Big Ten honors in 2013. The four-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selection. She also earned a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award in 2015, while claiming spots on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2014 and 2015.
