Matt Bloch opened his junior year with a bang, posting a time of 18:44.46 to finish fifth at the Augustana Twilight Invitational. Bloch’s fifth-place finish helped the Huskers claim the team title.
The Californian reappeared at the Big Ten Championships, finishing as the 11th Husker across the line in a time of 27:39.0.
Bloch continued to improve his times during the 2013 season, regularly running as a top-five runner throughout the year. He opened his sophomore campaign by placing eighth (19:48.2) in the University Division at the Augustana Twilight in Sioux Falls, S.D. He helped the Huskers to an opening meet victory. At the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational, Bloch finished 11th with a time of 25:55.00.
In a talent-laden field at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Bloch finished as the third Husker across the line in a time of 25:41 (87th). He added an 11th-place finish (25:55.90) at the Tim Young Invitational in Vermillion, S.D.
He closed his competitive season by placing 75th at the Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., with a time of 25:51.4.
A solid performer in the classroom, Bloch earned academic All-Big Ten honors.
Bloch became one of the top young runners for the Nebraska cross country team in 2012.
Bloch started strong, placing ninth (28:26.90) at the UNO/Creighton Classic in Omaha. He was one of three Huskers to finish in the top 10 at the meet.
At the KU Rim Rock Farm Classic in Lawrence, Kan., Bloch posted a regular-season best 25:44.30 at the meet to place 72nd overall.
In his first postseason, Bloch ran a season-best of 25:15 to place 63rd at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich. He followed that performance by finishing as NU’s top runner at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo. Bloch finished 107th overall in a time of 32:59.98.
A standout in the classroom as well, Bloch earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of 2012-13.

Bloch brought strong credentials to the Nebraska cross country team after finishing third at the CIF Southern Section finals and fifth at the CIF state championships as a senior.
The native of Village Valley, Calif., competed at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, where he was also a first-team all-state performer in cross country.
The son of Steve and Mary Bloch, Matt was born July 13, 1994. He was an accounting major and earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May of 2017. He claimed academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore in 2013. He was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll on two occasions.
