The lone senior on Nebraska’s 2014 women’s cross country team, Shawnice Williams provided leadership while competing in four meets for the Huskers.
Williams opened her season with an 11th-place finish at the Augustana Twilight Invitational, helping the Huskers to a second-place team finish. She followed with a 31st-place finish in a time of 23:55.40 at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneers Park in Lincoln. She helped the Huskers to a fifth-place team finish.
Williams reappeared during the Big Ten Championships as Nebraska’s No. 3 finisher, notching a time of 22:33.9. She closed the season as Nebraska’s No. 4 finisher at the NCAA Midwest Regional with a time of 22:41.3.
Williams made a smooth transition from middle distance running on the track to cross country in 2013. In her first season with the distance squad, Williams saw her times improve drastically from start to finish during the year.
Williams capped a strong first cross country season on the course by finishing as Nebraska’s No. 3 runner at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Ames, Iowa, on Nov. 15. Williams posted a time of 22:18.5 to finish 112th overall, trailing only Anna Peer and Isabel Andrade among Nebraska’s runners.
Williams was NU’s No. 4 runner at the Big Ten Championships on Nov. 3. She covered the course in West Lafayette, Ind., in 23:05.4 to finish 83rd overall at the Big Ten meet.
Williams opened her cross country career by finishing 18th overall as the fifth Husker to cross the finish line at the Augustana Twilight in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Sept. 6. She was NU’s No. 6 runner at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational on Sept. 21. She covered the course at Pioneers Park in 24:03.70 to finish 47th overall. Williams finished fifth among the Huskers and 173rd overall (23:59.0) at the talent-laden Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 28. She did not compete in the regular-season finale at the Tim Young Invitational in Vermillion, S.D., on Oct. 19.
A strong performer in the classroom and the community, Williams earned academic All-Big Ten honors in cross country in 2013, before claiming a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2014. She was also an inaugural member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2014.
Before Nebraska (West Los Angeles College)
Williams came to Nebraska from West Los Angeles College, where she recorded personal-best times of 12.68 in the 100 meters, 25.81 in the 200 meters, 55.33 in the 400 meters and 2:08.31 in the 800. She won the 800-meter crown at the 2012 California Community College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships, finishing with her personal-best time. Her 800 time was also a West Los Angeles College record. She was named the West Los Angeles Female Athlete of the Year. She also claimed the 800-meter title at the Western State Conference Championships (2:16.89). Prior to joining West Los Angeles College, Williams attended Paramount High School.
Shawnice is the daughter of Clinton Williams and Brenda Williams. Shawnice has two brothers, Clinton Jr., and Xavier, and one sister, Ranisha. Shawnice was born on March 18, 1992. A psychology major, Williams earned academic All-Big Ten accolades in 2013. She is a four-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and a two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
