Bio

2007 (Senior)

Alec Maduza made a commitment to the Nebraska cross country program to complete his eligibility and return for the 2007 season even though he could have graduated by completed summer courses. Maduza was honored a co-captain for the Huskers after a strong junior season in 2006, when he returned to Nebraska from his home state of Wisconsin. Maduza was bothered by a leg injury all year and was only able to compete in two meets, the Roy Griak and the Chile Pepper Festival. Finished 188th at the Roy Griak with a time of 28:24.0 and finished 154th at the Chile Pepper Festival with a time of 33:52.0.

2006 (Junior)

Maduza returned to Nebraska in excellent condition, taking third overall at the season-opening Creighton/UNO Classic. He established his position as one of the Huskers’ best runners, finishing third or higher among NU runners in six of the seven meets. At the Big 12 Championships, Maduza finished 75th overall, seven spots higher than his conference meet in 2004, and second on the team behind only Brian Parr. His late-season success continued in the final meet of the year with a career-best 92nd-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Maduza’s improvements were largely due to three top-30 overall finishes on the year, a feat he had only accomplished once during his previous two seasons (2003, 2004) at Nebraska.

Maduza’s track season was highlighted by a personal-best 10,000 meter time during the outdoor season with a mark of 31:50.26 to take fifth at the Kansas Relays.

2005 (Redshirt)

Maduza was not a student at Nebraska during the cross country season. He attended classes at the University of Wisconsin but was not a member of the cross country squad before he returned to Lincoln in January 2006.

On the track, Maduza ran a 5,000-meter personal best (15:32.56) at the Colorado State, Kent State Triangular. On an oversized track at the Iowa State Classic, Maduza topped his 5,000-meter best with a 15:09.33. He also ran a 3,000-meter personal best of 8:54.78 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Outdoors, Maduza ran then-personal best times of 15:30.53 and 32:09.32 in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs at the Emporia State Relays and Drake Relays, respectively.

2004 (Sophomore)

Maduza finished a season-best 57th as the Huskers’ No. 2 finisher at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational. He was Nebraska’s third finisher at the Roy Griak Invite, before finishing as NU’s fourth runner in the final four meets. He redshirted the indoor track season and ran sparingly outdoors.

2003 (Freshman)

Finishing as a member of Nebraska’s top five every time he raced, Maduza was the top newcomer on the team. He was also the first Husker to finish at the Big 12 Championships.

Maduza had indoor season-best times of 15:40.08 in the 5,000 meters, 8:56.70 in the 3,000 meters and 4:31.61 in the mile. He decided to redshirt during the outdoor track season to prepare for the 2004 cross country season.

High School

A five-time letterwinner with two in cross country and three in track for Coach Tim Kenney at Shorewood High School, Maduza scored a third-place finish at the 2001 Division 2 Wisconsin state championship to help his team to a third-place finish. Maduza’s high school 5K cross country personal best was 15:58.

On the track, Maduza fought injuries during his senior season, but still finished fourth in the 3,200-meter run (9:47) at the 2003 Wisconsin Division 2 state championships. Maduza set most of his track personal bests as a junior, including a 9:46.1 over 3,200 meters at the Tiger Invitational. Qualifying for the 2002 Division 2 championships, Maduza did not place in the 3,200-meter run for the Greyhounds. His high school track best in the 1,600-meter was 4:33.86 (indoor).

Personal

The son of Mark Maduza and Theresa Palazzari, Alec was born on July 22, 1985. Maduza has a younger sister, Claire (19). Alec is a history major and will graduate in December.
