Chris Stephenson Earns Big Ten Gymnast of the Week
Chris Stephenson claimed his second Big Ten Gymnast-of-the-Week award on Monday from the conference, after his performance on March 4 against Penn State and Iowa. Stephenson earned the honor earlier this season on Jan. 23. This is the second consecutive week that the Huskers have claimed the honor, as Anton Stephenson won the award last week.
Chris Stephenson claimed the all-around title with a season-high score of 83.50, which included a season-high performance on high bar (14.00) and a career-high score of 14.60 on parallel bars. On the other events, the junior finished with scores of 14.15 (floor), 13.15 (pommel horse), 13.25 (still rings) and 14.35 (vault).
The Fishers, Indiana, native led the Huskers to a first-place finish over Penn State and Iowa, which included season-high scores on pommel horse (69.80), vault (71.40), high bar (68.70) and total score (418.350). The victories gave NU its first conference wins of the season and it was the first time Nebraska beat Penn State and Iowa in the regular season since 1999 and 2013, respectively.
Stephenson and the Huskers take one week off before traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the Hawkeyes again on March 20. Competition is set for 6 p.m. It will be televised on BTN and will also be available on BTN2GO and the BTN2GO mobile app.
Illinois’ Sebastian Quiana took home Freshman-of-the-Week accolades, after taking second on floor to help the Illini win the Puerto Rico Gymnastics Challenge on March 4.
