The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team is hosting its annual intrasquad meet this Friday, with march-in set to begin at 6 p.m. on the third floor of Mabel Lee Hall. The event is free and open to the public, as fans can get a chance to get a first look at the Cornhuskers’ routines before the 2017 season kicks off in January.
The Huskers will compete in Olympic order (vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise) at the intrasquad. No official individual or team scores will be given out.
Schedule cards and autograph cards will be available at Mabel Lee Hall, and the Huskers will sign autographs after the event.
NU returns 10 gymnasts from last year’s team, which finished eighth at the NCAA Championships. Seniors Jennie Laeng and Ashley Lambert hope to lead the Huskers to another successful season in 2017.
Juniors Danielle Breen and Grace Williams both earned All-Big Ten honors a year ago, and bring all-around experience to this year’s squad. They are joined by Abbie Epperson, a transfer from Maryland eligible to compete this season.
A trio of sophomores look to take the next step in 2017, as Sienna Crouse, Catelyn Orel and Megan Schweihofer each saw action for the Big Red last season.
Three redshirt freshmen and four freshmen hope to break into the lineups this season. Megan Kuo and Kami Shows both saw action in exhibition for the Huskers last season, while Kelli Chung trained on all four events as a freshman before suffering an elbow injury that kept her from competing in 2016. Alexa Clark, Sierra Hassel, Taylor Houchin and Laura Oh look to add depth to the Husker lineups and help the Huskers back to the NCAA Championships in their first season.
Nebraska’s 2017 schedule is highlighted by four home events, including the NCAA Lincoln Regional at the Devaney Center on April 1. The Huskers will also host Penn State on Jan. 15, Iowa on Feb. 5 and the annual Masters Classic on Feb. 25. NU’s road schedule features meets with defending NCAA champion Oklahoma, defending Big Ten champion Michigan and 2016 Big Ten regular season champion Minnesota.
The 2017 season opens on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017, as the Huskers welcome Big Ten rival Penn State to the Devaney Center. The meet is a part of the Tumble N Rumble, as the Nebraska wrestling team will host Michigan simultaneously at the Devaney Center with both events scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m.
