Before Nebraska Steinauer was a member of the Cal State Fullerton women's gymnastics team from 2007-2009. She was named to the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches Academic Honor Roll and the Western Athletic Conference's All-Academic Team. As a freshman, Steinauer competed on vault at the NCAA Regionals in Corvallis, Ore., finishing in a tie for 14th (9.775). She was a second-team All-WAC selection as a result of her fourth-place finish at the 2008 WAC Championships. She competed on vault in 11 of the team's 12 regular season meets in 2008, averaging a team-best 9.802, while also setting a school record for a single season. She set or matched her career of 9.85 three times. Steinauer also competed on beam and floor for the Titans.
Steinauer competed for coach Don Houlton at Nebraska Gold Gymnastics Academy. She was a 2004 Western Nationals Qualifier and a 2005 J.O. Nationals alternate. Steinauer was also a six-time regional qualifier and the 2007 state vault champion in Nebraska.
Personal Maddie Steinauer was born on May 8, 1989 in Omaha, Neb. She is the daughter of Nick and Amy Steinauer and has two sisters, Elizabeth and Carly, and two brothers, Nick and Will. A 2007 graduate of Marian High School, she earned first honors all four years of high school and was a member of the National Spanish Honor Society. She is a biology major at Nebraska.
