Injury Stops Filipcic after Strong One-Meter Effort

By NU Athletic Communications

Indianapolis - Senior Anna Filipcic experienced a dramatic end to her collegiate career on Thursday at the NCAA Championships.

The Omaha native led the competition on the one-meter board after the first two rounds of prelims, but faltered on her third dive and dropped to 23rd. Filipcic showed her resolve when she came back during her next three dives, putting herself in position for a spot in the finals. The top eight qualifiers in the preliminary session make it to finals, but Filipcic was edged out by just .05 for the eighth position in the final round. She qualified for consolation finals by finishing ninth in the preliminary round.

However, In her warm up for the consolation finals, Filipcic hit her foot on the board and was immediately taken to be evaluted by medical staff. The injury prevented her from competing in the consolation finals.

"First of all, today was a remarkable," said head coach Pablo Morales of the rollercoaster day at the IU Natatorium. "The fact that she was leading the national championships after two rounds, faltered on the third round to the point where you don't think she can come back, and then did come back was exceptional."

"She proved she was not only an amazing diver, but an amazing person who has that type of resolve. Anna is probably the greatest diver that we've had at the University of Nebraska and her hard work and determination will leave a lasting impact on the program," Morales added on Filipcic's legacy.

Filipcic, who earned a spot in Friday's three-meter competition, will be unable to compete due to her injury. Last season, Filipcic earned All-America honors with a 10th-place finish in the one-meter dive at the NCAA Championships. She qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of her four seasons at Nebraska.

Freshman Abigail Knapton will represent the Huskers in the three-meter dive on Friday and in the platform competition on Saturday.
