Huskers Surge Past Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minn-The Nebraska women’s tennis team closed the weekend on Sunday with a 7-0 sweep of Minnesota. No. 36 Nebraska’s (10-1) win over No. 59 Minnesota (4-5) gave them their fifth win over a ranked opponent this season and their second this weekend.

“The kids approached the day with the same intensity they always bring,” Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. “It is fun to watch this group compete.”

Nebraska’s No. 76-ranked duo of Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein kicked off doubles action with an 8-4 win over Magdalena Wiecha and Alexa Palen in No. 1 doubles. Janine Weinreich and Jennifer Holmberg followed, topping Minnesota’s Doron Muravnik and Mariana Spilca in No. 2 doubles, 8-3. Maike Zeppernick and Patricia Veresova closed out doubles action with their 8-4 win over Peta Forsyth and Elianna Kantar at the No. 3 spot.

Nebraska carried its 1-0 advantage into singles action and didn’t look back, capturing wins in all singles matches to complete their sweep. Zeppernick was first to finish, tacking up a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 6 singles over Minnesota’s Kantar. Geibert wrapped up her win next, defeating Wiecha, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 position. Holmberg then added another win for NU, topping Forsyth in No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-2.  Next to complete play was Weinreich, who defeated Spilca in No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Weinstein battled back from a close first set to dominate her opponent in No. 3 singles, Muravnik. Finishing action on the day was Veresova, who conqured Palen in No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-3.

“Our kids continue to improve,” Perez said. “Coach Jacobson and I are very proud of them. We look forward to each day with this group and know we can get even better.”

The Huskers will have a short break before they take the court again. The team will host future Big 10 foe Ohio State on March 11 at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
