Huskers Extend Winning Streak in Defeat Over Buckeyes

Lincoln- The No. 32 Nebraska women's tennis team defeated its' sixth ranked opponent of the season on Friday night by taking down the No. 45 Ohio State Buckeyes, 4-3, at the Nebraska Tennis Center. In what was a preview for next year's move to the Big Ten conference, the Huskers used strong doubles play and victories from the middle of their singles lineup to collect the victory.

NU improved their season record to 11-1 and has now won 10-straight matches, with their last loss coming to Northwestern on Jan. 30. The Huskers have had a 10-match winning streak on their schedule for four straight seasons.

After falling behind early to the duo of Kelsey Haviland and Gabby Steele (OSU), NU's Jennifer Holmberg and Janine Weinreich battled back to capture the Huskers' first victory of the day at the No. 2 doubles spot, winning by an 8-6 count.

NU clinched the doubles point when Patricia Veresova and Maike Zeppernick (NU) held off a late surge from Kara Cecil and Noelle Malley (OSU) at the No. 3 doubles position, 8-5. At the top doubles spot, No. 76 Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein (NU) dug themselves out of a 6-5 hole to win in a tiebreaker, 8-7, over Paloma Escobedo and Cami Hubbs (OSU) for the Huskers sweep in doubles play.

In singles, Weinstein (NU) made quick work of Cecil (OSU) at the No. 3 singles spot, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, for the Huskers second point. Holmberg (NU) extended the team lead to 3-0 with her victory over Fidan Manashirova (OSU) at the No. 5 spot.

The match was clinched for the Huskers when Veresova (NU) defeated Haviland (OSU), 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.

Ohio State took the last three matches, as Geibert (NU) dropped only her third match of the season to Escobedo (OSU) at the No. 1 spot, and Zeppernick (NU) fell in a third-straight tiebreaker to Hubbs (OSU) to conclude the match. Weinreich (NU) was forced to retire in the third set of her match against Steele (OSU)

The Huskers return to action on Sunday, March 13, when they travel to Iowa City to face the Iowa Hawkeyes at 2 p.m.
