The Nebraska women’s tennis team capped their weekend with a strong 5-2 victory over Kansas in Lincoln. The No. 41 Huskers (16-3, 4-1 Big 12) reined in the Jayhawks (7-9, 1-5 Big 12) under sunny skies on Sunday and finished their weekend with a 2-0 record.

Nebraska grabbed the early lead in doubles action as Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein (NU) notched the upset win at the No. 1 position over No. 73 Ekaterina Morozova and Dylan Windom (KU), 8-4. Geibert and Weinstein are now 14-3 this season in No. 1 doubles and 3-2 against ranked opponents.

Kansas would then set the doubles score even with a win at the No. 3 spot. Monica Pezzotti and Paulina Los (KU) toppled Maike Zeppernick and Frederike Putthoff (NU), 8-3.

The doubles point would be decided at the No. 2 position, where Patricia Veresova and Janine Weinreich (NU) found themselves behind early to Erin Wilbert and Sara Lazarevic (KU). Veresova and Weinreich dug in, tied up the match at 3-3 and didn’t look back, battling their way to a 8-4 win and allowing NU to clinch the doubles point.

The Huskers took control early in singles play, racking up three consecutive victories to clinch the match and adding a fourth later on. Geibert put NU up 2-0 early with her 6-3, 6-1 victory over Pezzotti at the No. 1 position. Geibert went 4-0 this weekend in singles and doubles play, including a 2-0 record against ranked opponents.

Weinreich was next to add a point for Nebraska, downing Wilbert, 6-3, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. Weinreich’s victory snapped her five-match losing streak in singles and is her first singles win since March 13.

Veresova clinched the dual victory for Nebraska at the No. 2 spot, defeating Lazarevic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Veresova’s winning streak at the No. 2 singles position is now up to 13-0. Veresova has not lost a singles match while playing in the No. 2 slot this year.

Kansas picked up their first point of the day with a win at the No. 5 position. Windom defeated Frederike Putthoff (NU), 6-4, 6-1.

After dropping the first set in No. 3 singles to Los, Weinstein cruised to victories in the second and third sets, winning by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Weinstein is 12-4 this season at the No. 3 spot.

The match closed out with KU tacking on one final point in No. 6 singles. In her first action since being injured against Oklahoma State on March 20, Jennifer Holmberg (NU) took the court at the No. 6 position for the Huskers. Holmberg hung tough with Victoria Khanevskaya (KU), but fell in a tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).

The Huskers will spend the upcoming week preparing for a pair of tough road matches in Texas next weekend. NU will face No. 9 Baylor on Friday in Waco at 5 p.m. before traveling to Lubbock on Sunday to challenge No. 45 Texas Tech at 11 a.m.
