Nebraska Head Football Coach Bo Pelini Wednesday confirmed the hiring of four new assistants to the Husker staff:
  • Ross Els will coach Nebraska's linebackers
  • Rich Fisher will coach Husker receivers
  • John Garrison is the new assistant offensive line/tight ends coach
  • Corey Raymond will coach NU's secondary

Pelini also confirmed Wednesday that Tim Beck, who previously coached Nebraska running backs, will become offensive coordinator and work with Husker quarterbacks.

Carl Pelini will continue in his role as defensive coordinator, and John Papuchis will become recruiting coordinator in addition to his duties as defensive line coach and special teams coordinator.

Ron Brown, the most veteran coach on the Nebraska staff, will move from tight ends coach to running backs coach.

Barney Cotton will continue in his roles as associate head coach and offensive line coach, along with Garrison.

Els, a Lincoln native, recently completed his sixth season as linebacker coach and fourth as special teams coordinator for Frank Solich at Ohio. He went to Ohio after four seasons at New Mexico State, where he spent the last two years as defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. He also was a head coach and State College Coach of the Year at Hastings (Neb.) College. In addition, he coached at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Northern Iowa.

Fisher, a backup linebacker on three Big Eight conference championship teams at Colorado (1989-92), was an assistant coach at Oklahoma State, Colorado and Idaho. After becoming a partner in a golf academy business in Boston, Fisher became a high school head football coach at the Rivers School in Boston in 2009. The program had not experienced a winning season since the 1970s and last season averaged more than 40 points a game and went 8-0 before losing a prep bowl game.

Garrison, a prep All-American at Blue Springs, Mo., was one of three true freshman to play at Nebraska in 1999. He went on to letter four years at center, became a Husker team captain in 2002 and was a second-team All-Big 12 Conference player. Pelini promoted Garrison from within the ranks. For the past three years, he has been an intern on the offensive staff with primary duties of breaking down video of the opposing team's defense.

Raymond, a four-year cornerback starter at LSU and six-year veteran of the NFL, was on the LSU coaching staff when Pelini was defensive coordinator there, and the Tigers won the national championship. At LSU, Raymond worked with the cornerbacks and strength and conditioning program. Over the past two seasons, Raymond coached the cornerbacks at Utah State. The Louisiana native also coached high school football in his home state after his pro career ended.

The four newcomers to the NU staff fill positions that were vacated by Mike Ekeler, Ted Gilmore, Marvin Sanders and Shawn Watson.
