Four members of the Nebraska women's tennis team claimed spots in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Preseason Rankings released recently by the ITA.
Mary Weatherholt, who produced a stellar 2012 campaign as a junior, used a strong summer circuit of U.S. Open qualifying to climb to No. 30 in the preseason singles rankings. The native of Prairie Village, Kan., closed 2012 at No. 49 in the final ITA rankings after advancing to the NCAA Singles Championships. Weatherholt, a fifth-year senior in 2012-13 for the Huskers, was the 2012 Big Ten Female Tennis Athlete of the Year.
Fellow senior Patricia Veresova also ascended the preseason rankings, jumping more than 30 spots from the end of last year. The native of Piestany, Slovakia, closed 2012 at No. 99 and opened her final season as a Husker at No. 66 in the preseason ITA rankings.
A pair of experienced doubles standouts for the Huskers also earned a preseason top-50 ranking. The German duo of Stefanie Weinstein and Janine Weinreich open the season at No. 45 in the ITA rankings. Weinstein teamed with departed senior Madeleine Geibert to finish at No. 38 in the 2012 ITA rankings.
