Las Cruces, N.M. - Cassie Deeg fired a second-round 70 to climb into a tie for seventh with teammate Katelyn Wright to help the Nebraska women's golf team move into a tie for sixth at the 13-team Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational on Tuesday.
Deeg, a true freshman from Hugo, Minn., jumped 15 spots on the individual leaderboard with her two-under-par 70 in Tuesday's second round. The 70 matched the best round of the day by any of the 76 golfers in the tournament. She heads into Wednesday's final round on the par-72, 6,319-yard New Mexico State Golf Course with a 36-hole score of 145.
Deeg vaulted into a tie with Wright, a junior from Incline Village, Nev., who added a solid 74 in the second round, after opening the tournament with a 71 on Monday. Wright will take aim at her third straight top-20 finish to open the season on Wednesday.
Deeg and Wright are both within striking distance of tournament leader Yupaporn Kawinpakorn from Kansas. Kawinpakorn managed a second-round 71 to close the day at 140 over two rounds. She owns a two-stroke lead over Colorado State's Emily Roering (71-71-142) and a four-shot edge over CSU's Betsy Kelly, Washington State's Mallory Kent, Nevada's Nikki Prichard and Idaho's Kaitlyn Oster, who are all tied at even-par 144. Kelly and Prichard matched Deeg for Tuesday's best individual rounds.
With Deeg and Wright leading the way for the Huskers, Nebraska produced a season-best 299 team score. Redshirt freshman Morgan Smejkal (Columbus, Neb.) added a solid 76 to move up five spots on the individual leaderboard to a tie for 51st at 155. Junior Steffi Neisen (New Prague, Minn.) contributed a 79 to join Smejkal in a tie for 51st. Redshirt freshman Jackie O'Doherty (Lincoln, Neb.) added a 79 of her own to slide up two spots in the standings into a tie for 69th at 161.
In addition to the performances of the Huskers inside the lineup, redshirt freshman Cassidy Stelzmiller (Placerville, Calif.) carded a career-best 76 while playing as an individual. Stelzmiller moved up eight spots in the individual standings into a tie for 64th at 159 after 36 holes.
