Lincoln - The Nebraska
soccer team (6-8-1, 3-4-0 Big Ten) fell behind early to No. 4 Penn State(13-2-0,
7-0-0 Big Ten) and was never able to recover, as the Huskers fell 4-0 to the 14-time
defending Big Ten champions on Friday night at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The
Huskers were only out-shot, 15-13, on the night, but were unable to get past
the Nittany Lions' stout defense, as the Huskers put just three shots on goal
against Erin McNulty.
Caroline Flynn continually attacked the PSU defense with a team-high four
shots, including one on goal, while Caroline Gray added three shots on the
Nittany Lions jumped to a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when
Maya Hayes, the 2011 Big Ten Forward of the Year, scored her 10th goal of the
season on an assist from Christine Nairn. Nairn drove the ball up the north
side of the field and when NU goalie Emma Stevens shifted to defend Nairn, she
crossed the ball to Hayes, who was coming up the middle of the field and
delivered a shot from 15 yards straight out.
Weber pushed PSU's lead to 2-0 at 20:23 with her ninth goal of the year. The
freshman blasted a shot from 20 yards away and when a pair of Husker defenders
tried to block the shot, the ball got deflected off one of the Huskers' legs
and slipped past Stevens.
later added her second goal of the game at 81:19 when Stevens was unable to
control a cross and Hayes stole the ball and dribbled in for an easy open-net
shot. Hayes notched her fifth point of the game at 84:17 when she assisted on
Taylor Schram's second goal of the season.
Huskers finish the weekend on Sunday when the Ohio State Buckeyes visit the
Nebraska Soccer Field. The game is scheduled for a Noon kickoff and will be the
first ever game between the two teams in Lincoln. Fans can watch the game live
