Freshman Kolton Lapa became the first Husker men's golfer
of the 2012-13 season to earn Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolades, the
conference announced Wednesday.
Lapa tied for seventh at the NMSU Golf Course on Tuesday
after firing a 2-under-par 211 over 54 holes. He finished six strokes behind co-individual
champions Chris Gilbert of Kansas and Blake Biddle of UNLV at the Herb Wimberly
Intercollegiate.
Lapa, a native of Mesa, Ariz., opened the tournament with
a 1-under-par 70 in Monday's first round. He followed that up by firing a
2-under-par 69 in Monday's second round at the par-71, 7,074-yard layout. In
Tuesday's final round Lapa posted a 1-over-par 72. With the award, Lapa becomes
the first Husker golfer since Scott Willman in March 2012 to win Big Ten
Golfer-of-the-Week honors.
The Huskers will conclude their fall season on Friday and
Saturday at the UTEP Miner Invitational in El Paso, Texas. The tournament will
start with a 9:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun at Butterfield Trail Golf Course on Friday.
