Champaign, Ill. – It took a third-set tiebreaker, but Nebraska’s top double team of Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova remained in contention for a national title with a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6) victory over Georgia State’s Masa Grgan and Abigail Tere-Apisah Thursday evening.

The Husker duo, who are the No. 3 seed and assured of All-America honors based upon the spring results, now advance to the Round of 16 on Friday to take on the team of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans from William and Mary.

In the third set, Weatherholt and Veresova, who improved to 21-2 this spring, dropped the first two games before winning four straight games to take a 4-3 lead. Georgia State then broke the Husker serve to tie the set at four before regaining the lead at 5-4.

Nebraska bounced back, breaking GSU to tie the score at five before holding serve to take a 6-5 lead. Georgia State then held serve, sending the match to a tiebreaker. Neither team was able to take control, as the tiebreaker featured six ties before Nebraska won the final two points to earn a hard-fought victory.

Weatherholt, who has already earned All-America honors in singles, will have a busy Friday, as she will play in the round of 16 in both singles and doubles action. Weatherholt will play her singles match at 10 a.m. before teaming with Veresova in doubles starting at 3 p.m.
